Why your C-Bus app stopped working (and why the system is fine)
The lights still work. The app does not. Almost always it is the gateway, the vendor, or the network — not the C-Bus wiring in your walls.
The most common C-Bus complaint in Melbourne is not a lighting fault. It is: “the app used to work, and now it doesn’t.”
The house is fine. What died is the bridge between the house and the internet.
The four usual causes
- **The app was tied to a cloud service that shut down.** Small vendors come and go. When the server goes, the app becomes a blank screen, even though your system is perfectly healthy.
- **The gateway lost its network settings.** A power event, a router replacement, a changed IP range — the gateway is still there, but nothing can find it.
- **The mobile app is no longer maintained.** The operating system moved on; the app did not. Older apps stop working on new phones.
- **The account expired.** Some systems were sold with a subscription that has quietly lapsed.
None of these are electrical faults. None of them require touching your wiring.
What we do about it
We do not try to resurrect a dead vendor’s cloud. We replace the layer that broke:
- Keep the C-Bus network exactly as it is
- Fit a gateway that talks a documented, open protocol
- Run the connection through our own infrastructure, not a third party’s
- Give you an app in English and Chinese, with your room names
If the old gateway still works, we keep it. If it does not, it is a small hardware item — not a new system.
What to check before calling
- Does the app fail at home on Wi-Fi, but work on mobile data? That is a local network issue.
- Has your router been replaced recently? Check whether the gateway got a new address.
- Does the app open at all, or show a login error? A login error is usually the vendor, not the house.
The point
An app is not the system. It is a window onto the system. Windows get replaced; the house underneath does not have to.
Anyone who tells you the whole C-Bus must be replaced because the app stopped is either mistaken or selling something.
